SJD

Please reference the SJD Enrollment To-Do List for all general requirements of enrollment. Requirements specific to the SJD program are listed below.

Admissions Deposit

A $500 non-refundable admissions deposit is required to hold your place in the class.  Your deposit must be received by the commitment date specified on your acceptance letter.

Residence and Degree Requirements

S.J.D. students will enroll in the program for three to five years. The first year must be spent in residence at Wake Forest Law.  The student will be required, in consultation with their SJD faculty adviser, to enroll in at least two courses in the law school during the period of residency that complements the SJD student’s objectives.

In addition, the student will register each semester (including semesters not in residence) for the 6-credit hour Supervised Dissertation course. To be awarded the SJD degree, a candidate must complete and successfully defend, before their Dissertation Committee, a dissertation of publishable quality that constitutes an original and substantial scholarly contribution to the areas of law in which it is written.

Check-In Requirement

A formal, mandatory orientation for new SJD students will be held a week before classes start. During this meeting, you will be given important information needed to begin your participation in the program.  You will also have a tour of the school and have a chance to ask any questions you may have.

WFU Identification Card

Wake Forest requires all students to have a student ID card, called the Deacon One Card. Once you have your WFU username and password, please upload a photograph of yourself for the Deacon OneCard Office at http://go.wfu.edu/submitphoto.  The photograph will be used for your student ID card (Deacon OneCard).  Please use a color photo with a clear shot of your face. Be sure that you are the only person in the photo and that you are not wearing a hat or sunglasses.  You will receive your Deacon OneCard at orientation.

Email

You should have received an email from university IT to set up your Wake Forest University username and email address. This will allow you to set up your university accounts such as your email and your student Deacon Electronic Account Center (DEAC) where you will pay your tuition and fees.  If you failed to complete this set-up, please email help@wfu.edu to have your information resent. If you are starting your program in the fall semester, we will begin using your wfu.edu email account exclusively for important information starting July 15, so it is important that you are using that address by then.

Computing Requirements

All students enrolled in the SJD program must have a laptop computer that meets the requirements described on this web page.
